MAT107 Online : Course Information & Permission Request

Note: You may find it useful to print this page so you can follow the directions carefully.

Facts About the Course

  1. The course theme is History of Mathematics, but it is still a math course and you will do a LOT of math in the course.

  2. You MUST have prerequisites satisfied for the course when the course begins. If you don't have a 2.0 in MAT098 or a Math Placement Test score allowing you in, you will not be allowed to enroll or stay enrolled in the course. If you cannot prove you have prerequisites for the course and enroll, you will be dropped by the instructor. If you are taking MAT098 right now and end up not earning a 2.0, you may be allowed to register for the course, but once the quarter begins, you will be dropped when prerequisites are checked by the registration system in the first week of classes.

  3. The course involves a LOT of reading and writing (essays, online posts of opinions, projects, etc). Therefore, prior completion of English 101 is highly recommended. You will have to read all the material on your own and basically teach the course to yourself. Hence, if this is challenging to you, for whatever reason, please reconsider your decision to take this course.

  4. The course is highly structured with strict deadlines throughout the quarter. Late material and work is not accepted. You must stay on track, be disciplined, and be motivated if you want to finish the course with a passing grade.

  5. There are no in-person meetings in this course...it is conducted entirely online. However, the course requires that you log into the course web site 5 to 6 days a week. Therefore, you must have regular access to a computer connected to the Internet.

  6. You must log in to the course website within the first three days of the quarter and complete the introductory assignment. If you do not to do this, YOU WILL BE DROPPED FROM THE COURSE FOR NON-ATTENDANCE.

  7. If you are looking for an "easy" math course, you should not enroll for the course. The class is doable but it requires a lot of work and time. Students in the past have reported spending an average of 12 to 14 hours PER WEEK on this course. And pass rates in the past have been solid. However if you do not have the time or are unwilling to put in this kind of time into the course, please do not register for it.

  8. If you have high math anxiety or other issues that would make this course overly difficult, please reconsider whether or not this course is appropriate for you.

  9. If you are unfamiliar with the internet or computers, please don't take this course. Take a basic computer course first.

  10. Only the instructor for the course will be allowed to grant permission for this course. If you enroll without permission from the instructor, you will be dropped from the course to make room for those who went through the established permission process (this page and this form).

  11. Overloads will NOT granted in this course, and there are no electronic or official wait lists for this course, so you should enroll as soon as you can. Also, students will not be allowed to register once the quarter begins, so if you don't enroll before the first day of the quarter, you will not be able to get into the course.

  12. You should read a copy of a recent syllabus before you enroll. Click here to see one.

  13. You should also read a copy of a more detailed Info Sheet before you enroll. Click here to see the Info Sheet.

    • The Preliminary Mathematics Inventory will test you on whether or not you have the algebra and arithmetic skills needed for this course. You cannot ask for an entry code until you get at least 20 out of 25 points on this assignment.
